Glacier Peak turned up the defensive pressure on Jackson.
The Grizzlies limited the Timberwolves to only 16 points in the first half and went on to win the 4A District 1 boys basketball tournament semifinal game 61-43 Saturday, Feb. 10, at Marysville-Pilchuck High School.
The point total was a season low for the Wolfpack, which pleased Glacier Peak coach Brian Hunter.
“I was real happy to hold them to 43 in a district playoff game,” he said. “Sixteen points in the first half That’s good defensive basketball.”
Junior Fletcher Douglas and sophomore Brayden Corwin both did good jobs guarding Jackson’s Christian Liddell and Ben Olesen, Hunter added.
“Those two guys really make them go and they’re really good players,” Hunter said. “Our thought was you’ve got to make guys, who maybe aren’t used to playing in the spotlight, the guys and those two (Liddell and Olesen) are used to playing in it. I think our guys did a nice job of maybe forcing them to go to their second and third options at times.”
Glacier Peak senior Bobby Martin scored a game-high 21 points and Douglas added 16 points. Junior Evan Mannes finished with 13 points. Liddell led Jackson with 12 points.
“At this point wins are hard to come by and so I thought we played really well in stretches,” Hunter said. “It was definitely not a perfect game by any means.”
The Grizzlies (19-2) stretched a 16-6 first quarter lead to 23-6 early in the second quarter before finishing with a 30-16 halftime advantage. Glacier Peak headed in the final period with a 49-29 lead.
The Wolfpack (15-8) cut the Glacier Peak lead to 13 points in the fourth quarter but wasn’t able to get any closer.
The Grizzlies were scheduled to play Kamiak in the district championship game on Thursday, Feb. 15, after the Beacon’s deadline.
“It’s not anything we take for granted,” Hunter said of the opportunity to defend its district title. “We’ve played in a decent amount of these district championship games and we’ve had some success. I think these kids are making their own mark.”
Glacier Peak and Kamiak split their regular season series.
GRIZZLY GIRLS OPEN WITH WIN: Alexyss Newman scored a game-high 20 points to lead Glacier Peak to a 74-31 victory over Monroe in a first round 4A District 1 girls basketball tournament on Saturday, Feb. 10, at Marysville-Pilchuck High School. The Grizzlies jumped out to a 17-4 first quarter lead. Makayla Guerra and Aaliyah Collins each scored 10 points. Glacier Peak was scheduled to face Lake Stevens in the district title game on Thursday, Feb. 15, after the Beacon’s deadline.
