The Snohomish County Conservation District honored Green Team advisor Gail Walters as a 2016 Conservation Leader of the Year during a luncheon held Thursday in Mukilteo.

Walters teaches biology and environmental systems design at Henry M. Jackson High School in Mill Creek. Under her leadership, 10th and 11th grade students transformed a compacted patch of the campus into sustainable landscaping.

The Green Team is an AVID elective program that allows students to prepare for advanced education in specialized areas. Under her leadership, the Green Team at Jackson also evaluated storm water projects to reduce the impact of storm water on the environment.

A member of the Conservation Board praised Walters “as an exceptional example for other teachers because of her commitment to engaging her students in relevant environmental projects.
