As the Wesco 4A’s No. 4 seed, Glacier Peak drew a tough opponent in its quad district playoff football contest.

The Grizzlies played undefeated Sumner tough for most of the first half, but weren’t able to keep up with the Spartans, who pulled away for 47-14 victory Nov. 4 at Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner.

Glacier Peak trailed 10-7 after the first quarter. Quarterback Ayden Ziomas threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to Colton Bunt.

“The first quarter was back and forth and a very contested game at that point,” Glacier Peak coach Nick Bender said. “We definitely needed to come out strong in the second quarter. We stopped them. They punted. We got the ball. We don’t score.”

Sumner eventually took advantage of good field position late in the second quarter to score two touchdowns and headed into halftime with a 24-7 lead. The Spartans scored another touchdown in the third quarter before Ziomas threw a 75-yard touchdown pass to Bunt to cut the deficit to 31-14.

The Spartans tacked on two more touchdowns and a field goal in the final period. Sumner outgained Glacier Peak 511 to 299 yards with the primary advantage being the Spartans’ ground game – 232 to 68. The Grizzlies converted on only two of 16 third down plays.

Ziomas completed 16 of 22 passes for 227 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Bunt had 10 catches for 173 yards and two touchdowns.

Glacier Peak finished the year 5-5 overall in its first 4A season. The five losses were to all to teams that advanced to the playoffs.

“I think we were competitive at 4A,” Bender said.

The Grizzlies will return a decent amount of starters, including Ziomas, who will be a junior.

“We have a good core group,” Bender said. “They’re excited. They’re hungry, which is good.
