George Orwell (1903 -1950) wrote about it best, and what we now call an Orwellian misuse of a word or concept. An example being, the earth is an irregularly-shaped ellipsoid. But the “alternative facts” tell us it is flat. Or to put it another way, the conjecture of the flat earth can lead one to believe the earth is not an irregularly-shaped ellipsoid.
