With the start of a new school year, and students heading back to in-person learning, concern over whether the school's COVID safety protocols are sufficient in keeping kids and staff safe is on the top of everyone's mind. To address this, Everett Public Schools has created a chart that provides weekly updates on confirmed COVID cases in the local schools.

'We quickly track positive COVID cases in order to prevent further spread and keep as many students in in-person learning as feasible," Everett Public Schools communications director Kathy Reeves said. "We encourage families to keep students home if they have any symptoms in order to prevent any potential exposures."

The chart is updated weekly on Monday afternoons, and provides the number of confirmed COVID cases in students and staff and the number of instances of close contact in the week prior. Information presented in the graph is based on confirmed self-reports and data from the Snohomish Health District.

According to EPS, the data is based on students and staff who have been in a school building and does not include students who are enrolled in the Everett Virtual Academy.

As of Sept. 8, a total of six cases have been confirmed in staff district-wide, and six cases in students district-wide. However, there are a total of 36 instances of close contact district-wide.

At Jackson High, one student was confirmed with COVID, but five instances of close contact were confirmed.

At Heatherwood Middle, one staff member was confirmed with COVID. No instances of close contact were documented.

At Gateway Middle, one student was confirmed with COVID. No instances of close contact were documented.

"Our schools are focused not only on learning, but on the health and safety of our students and staff." Reeves said. "There are protocols in place for masking, hand sanitizing and social distancing to the greatest extent possible."

The chart can be accessed at: http://www.everettsd.org/Page/38776

EPS states that all data is provisional and can be subject to change.
