Water safety tips for lake and river swimmers

Martha Lake is a popular spot for Mill Creek residents to come and cool off from the summer heat. Officials encourage swimming with a buddy who can help in case an accident may occur.
Every year, the summer heat attracts many to the lakes and rivers to cool off, but with local drownings happening as well, and in light of recent accidents in the Puget Sound region, experts strongly caution folks to properly educate themselves on water safety.
Snohomish Regional Fire & Rescue's public information and education officer, Heather Chadwick, notes the two most important safety tips for open-water swimming:
• Always swim with a buddy.
• Always wear a properly-fitted life jacket when swimming in lakes and rivers.
