Sunshine laws are regulations requiring openness from government agencies, and when one reads the state’s Public Records Act, it is clear what the focus is: opening the doors and letting in the light.
Those laws are set by lawsuits. Somebody wins, and the governments must not only apply the law but know what it is, or hire an attorney to both redact documents and say which court case allows it.
As imperative as open government laws can be, they do have a cost, and finding a way to meet the demands of openness and taxpayer frugality is a dance.
The City of Mill Creek has taken some blows...
