Opening day of the Evergreen State Fair rounded up 33,866 pounds of canned goods to support food banks across Snohomish County.

Aug. 22 became the largest single-day food drive at the Evergreen State Fair, increasing 13% from last year. According to a news release from Volunteers of America Western Washington (VOAWW), donations from the food drive will provide 28,222 meals for families.

The collected goods will go to 18 food banks in the Snohomish Food Bank Coalition, including Mill Creek, Arlington, Camano Island, Edmonds, Everett, Granite Falls, Lake Stevens, Lynnwood, Maltby, Marysville, Monroe, Mountlake Terrace, Sultan, Snohomish, and Stanwood.

“We are extremely grateful for the generosity of the fairgoers and the partnership with Snohomish County Parks and Recreation and the Evergreen State Fair,”said Brian Smith, chief operating officer at VOAWW.

Although these donations will feed many families, the need is always constant with over 36,000 individuals most likely needing to visit a Snohomish County food bank this month. To support the Volunteers of America Hunger Prevention program, consider making a monetary donation by visiting http://www.voaww.org or calling 425-252-5320.
