Archbishop Murphy heads into the playoffs with a three-game winning streak.
The Wildcats had to rally from a 14-7 deficit to defeat Sedro-Woolley 42-14 in a Northwest Conference Sky Division football game Friday, Oct. 19 at Archbishop Murphy High School’s Terry Ennis Stadium.
Following a bye, the Wildcats (3-1 in the league, 4-1 overall) hosts Sehome (4-1, 6-3) in a winner-to-state/loser-out district playoff game at 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 2.
“We’re excited to play a good Sehome team and see how far the guys have come,” Archbishop Murphy coach Jerry Jensen said. “They have a talented quarterback. The line is the strength of their team. It’s going to pose a challenge.”
Archbishop Murphy jumped out to 7-0 over the Cubs (1-3, 3-5) on a 3-yard TD run by junior quarterback Victor Gabalis. Sedro-Woolley responded with two TD passes of 72 and 53 yards in the second quarter.
“We made great defensive adjustments at halftime,” Jensen said. “That was pretty much the key to slowing them down in the second half.”
Running backs Joe Ennis and Mason Mathis each scored 18-yard runs in the third quarter. Ennis ran for two more touchdowns and Jelani Guerrerro had a TD run in the fourth quarter.
“You want to try to play like we have in the second half,” Jensen said. “You’ve got try and come out fast and keep the momentum going.”
Ennis finished with 173 yards on 12 carries and scored three touchdowns. Mathis ran for 132 yards on 25 carries with one touchdown.
