Keegan Rubio and Brandon Seed each scored a goal off assists from Hayden Rubio, as the Grizzlies defeated Olympic 2-0 in a first round 4A state boys soccer tournament game Tuesday, May 15, at Glacier Peak High School.
Glacier Peak is scheduled to host Sumner at 6 p.m., Saturday, May 19 at Glacier Peak High School. The Spartans knocked off Mount Si 2-1 to advance.
A victory on Saturday would send the Grizzlies back to the state semifinals for the second straight year. Glacier Peak lost to Todd Beamer in last year’s semis and ended up placing third overall after defeating Central Valley.
The Grizzlies earned their seventh trip to the state tournament in the last nine years by defeating Mount Vernon 3-0 in the district championship game Thursday, May 10, at Goddard Stadium.
Keegan Rubio scored two goals and Danny Guerrero had the other score.
“I just feel like we took over in the second half,” Glacier Peak coach Teddy Mitalas said. “We had a lot more shots. We were attacking.”
This was the second straight district championship for the Grizzlies (13-3-1), who Mitalas said are coming together at the perfect time.
Glacier Peak started to really click as a team in a 6-2 victory over Kamiak in the final regular season game. Mitalas added that Grizzlies are healthy.
“We have a lineup that’s working well right now,” Mitalas said. “It’s the perfect time to be rolling.”
WILDCATS TAKE THIRD AT DISTRICTS: The three-time defending 2A state champions kept their hopes alive for a fourth title with a third place finish in the Bi-District tournament. The Wildcats defeated Mountlake Terrace 5-2 but then were blanked 4-0 by Sehome in the semifinals. The loss sent Archbishop Murphy into the loser’s bracket, where the Wildcats bounced back with 1-0 victory over Lynden. Archbishop Murphy defeated North Kitsap 3-1 in a first round state tournament game Wednesday, May 16, at North Kitsap High School. Archbishop Murphy will now face Columbia River in a 2A state quarterfinal matchup at a date and site to be determined.
JACKSON LOSES TO KAMIAK: Jackson’s season came to an end with a 4-1 loss to Kamiak in a loser-out 4A District tournament game Tuesday, May 8, at Everett Memorial Stadium. Robert Orlosky scored the only goal for the Timberwolves, who finished the season 9-6-2.
