Recreation and Tourism Director Brian Davern was honored by the Mill Creek City Council on Tuesday night, Feb. 27, for his hands-on involvement with community activities for the past decade.
Davern joined the city staff of Mill Creek in February 2008 as a recreation assistant and was promoted to recreation and tourism manager in July 2016.
Early in his career, Davern doubled the size of the city’s annual 3-on-3 basketball tournament and expanded the city’s Youth Basketball League. His involvement with the league enabled him to build relationships to attract more people from outside the city to spend money shopping and eating in Mill Creek.
“Brian has a passion for developing recreational programs and events that bring the community together,” said Joni Kirk, director of communications and marketing. “His focus is on the long-term benefits in terms of fitness, community development and making Mill Creek a place that people are drawn to because of its great amenities.”
Kirk said Davern has made a positive impact with his colleagues within the city office as well, as evidenced by being named Employee of the Year in 2014.
Davern recently completed the Leadership Snohomish County program, and serves on the boards of the Snohomish County Tourism Bureau and the Snohomish County Sports Commission. His experience with these groups has given him a broad view of initiatives and trends impacting the region, which he has applied to his work in Mill Creek.
The recreation director has led the charge to improve the Memorial Day and Veterans Day parades and launched a Veterans Advisory Committee to shape the city’s work with veterans. His work with veterans led directly to the formation of a Mill Creek AMVETS group.
He has also developed a robust tourism program, including a tourism website (www.millcreektourism.com) that features dining, shopping, recreation and entertainment opportunities in Mill Creek.
In his spare time, Davern enjoys many sporting activities, including skiing, snowboarding, boating, scuba diving and racquetball.
