Now that the summer weather has arrived, it’s time to get outside and enjoy it. Our recreation department has a lot of great activities lined up this summer, and I want to share a few of the highlights.

On July 30, the city is hosting a Mukilteo Strong Community Picnic to commemorate Jake Long, Jordan Ebner and Anna Bui on the one-year mark of their passing, to honor all those who were impacted by the event, and to celebrate the community spirit that has helped heal and rebuild Mukilteo.

You’re welcome to bring your own picnic basket and join with others at Lighthouse Park from 1-4 p.m. City recreation staff will be on hand with a variety of lawn games and activities, including sidewalk chalk for messages of hope and remembrance.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints of Mukilteo is donating free popsicles, the city will provide other small refreshments, as well, and several community groups will be volunteering in support of the event. There will also be free firewood available for beach fires in permitted fire pits, provided outdoor burning is allowed at the time.

We also have a great assortment of recreation classes and camps lined up, both outdoors and at the Rosehill Community Center. Camps this summer include Lego Camp, Art Camp, Fashion Design Camp, several sports camps, and Drama Camp.

A relatively new and popular class we are offering is puppy training. It is a great way to get that new canine family member trained properly. You can go to mukilteowa.gov/recreation to review our full slate of programs and camps or give us a call at 425-263-8180 for more information.

The grand finale of our summer activities is the Mukilteo Lighthouse Festival on Sept. 8-10. The festival will feature food, live music, fun activities and two great fireworks shows. The Festival is also hosting the Run-A-Muk on Saturday, Aug. 26, so lace up your running shoes and sign up for the 5K or 10K.

While we have a lot of fun activities and classes planned, not everyone is able to participate. This year, Mayor Gregerson has made it a priority to raise funds for our recreation scholarship program.
